Tubungan has been selected as one of the four sites in Western Visayas for the new TRAs. The facility will be equipped with essential amenities aimed at enhancing the travel experience. This was formalized during a special meeting of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council at Casa Real de Iloilo on August 15. Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. signed a memorandum of agreement with representatives from the uniformed sector, setting up a collaborative framework among various agencies, including the Iloilo Police Provincial Office, Philippine Coast Guard Iloilo, Bureau of Fire Protection Iloilo, the 301st Infantry Brigade of the Philippine Army, the Regional Maritime Unit, and the Philippine Red Cross Iloilo. The SRR-Iloilo Team, which will include a minimum of 16 well-trained search and rescue teams, is tasked with swift deployment during man-made disasters requiring immediate attention. Additionally, the provincial government will provide essential logistical support to facilitate the team’s operations. The team will work closely with local government units, conduct necessary training for emergency responders, and organize joint exercises and drills. A Joint Operations Center will also be established to ensure real-time information exchange, resource allocation, and monitoring of the overall response. BALITA HALIN SA KAPITOLYO PHOTO ILOILO – Despite regular cleaning claims by residents, the true breeding sites of dengue mosquitoes often lie in overlooked household and outdoor areas like drums and discarded tires on roofs, according to the Iloilo Provincial Health Office (IPHO). The IPHO made this discovery during recent inspections of 43 municipalities, including Passi City. Dr. Maria Socorro Colmenares-Quiñon, head of the IPHO, said the most common mosquito breeding sites include trash, blocked drainage, and containers such as water storage drums and discarded vehicle tires. Even the most innocuous items like bottles can serve as breeding grounds for the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the primary vector of the dengue virus, said Quiñon. She emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach beyond simple sweeping, urging the community to adopt a proactive “search and destroy” strategy against these breeding places. Dengue fever continues to ravage Iloilo, with a 320% increase in cases compared to last year, according to the IPHO. From January 1 to August 10, 2024, the province recorded 4,595 cases and 10 deaths, a significant rise from the 1,095 cases and single fatality during the same period in 2023. The rise in dengue cases has been particularly severe in areas like Barotac Viejo, Banate, Passi City, Concepcion, and Batad, often linked to inadequate water storage practices in communities where residents do not sleep at home due to work commitments. The recent data includes a new fatality from Barotac Nuevo, bringing the total deaths this year to 11. The victims range in age and include: * a six-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl from Miag-ao * a four-year-old boy from Lambunao * two 20-year-old men and a 15-year-old boy from Badiangan * an eight-year-old girl from Igbaras * a 41-year-old woman from Barotac Nuevo * a three-year-old girl from Banate * a 10-year-old boy from Passi City Dengue fever is a viral infection transmitted through the bites of infected Aedes mosquitoes. It presents flu-like symptoms including high fever, headache, vomiting, muscle, and joint pains, and a characteristic skin rash. In severe cases, it can develop into dengue hemorrhagic fever, which can be fatal if not treated appropriately. Text Any textual data included in the document Iloilo capitol needs P56M for retroactive salary hike By Ime Sornito -Tuesday, August 20, 2024 ILOILO – The provincial government is in need of P56 million to provide retroactive salary increases for over 2,000 regular employees from January 2024. This challenge arises from Department of Budget and Management (DBM) regulations that limit retroactive increases to national government employees, requiring local government units (LGUs) like Iloilo to wait until their budgets are approved. Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. explained that although the capitol has potential budget sources for these increases, he must first lobby the DBM to allow retroactivity for LGU employees. “According to the DBM circular, retroactive increases apply only to the national government. For LGUs, increases take effect upon budget approval,” Defensor said. He plans to advocate through the League of Provinces of the Philippines for permission to grant retroactive increases to LGU employees, especially if the LGU, such as the Iloilo province, has sufficient funds. The proposal for the salary increase has been submitted through Supplemental Budget Number 2 to the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) for approval. Upon endorsement, the Salary Standardization Law (SSL) VI will be implemented for the employees. DBM Secretary Amenah Pangandaman recently emphasized the importance of these increases. “The initial tranche is retroactive to January 1, 2024, which means there will be a salary differential or back pay,” she said. The salary hike is scheduled across four tranches, with the first occurring this year and the second planned for 2025. Pangandaman further assured, “We have secured funding not only for 2024 but also for 2025. The increase this year is guaranteed, and there will be an additional increase next year.” She said P70 billion has been earmarked in the FY 2025 Miscellaneous Personnel Benefits Fund (MPBF) to cover these increments under SSL VI, with the second tranche effective from January 1, 2025.
