Silubrico -Thursday, June 27, 2024 ILOILO – Authorities captured the most wanted fugitive in Iloilo province on Tuesday, ending a year-long manhunt. The 28-year-old, known by the alias “Boy-Boy”, was arrested at 11:19 a.m. in Barangay San Julian, Janiuay, where he had been hiding. Police identified the suspect as a resident of Barangay Yabon, Janiuay, and conducted the operation with a team comprising members from the Janiuay Police Station, the 603rd Company Regional Mobile Force Battalion 6, and the Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO), under an arrest warrant for murder. Police Colonel Bayani Razalan, officer-in-charge director of the IPPO, said the suspect was wanted for the murder of Loreto Ardiente, who was fatally stabbed on May 24, 2023, in Barangay Golgota, Janiuay. Following the incident, the suspect fled the area but recently returned, leading to his capture. Baronda is not only a duly elected representative, she is, first and foremost, a woman and a leader. Turla, who is being coached by John Aghon and Rommel Gardose, also got a silver medal in the elementary boys discus throw event on Thursday afternoon. Mico Villaran, a standout from the Romanito P. The 7-foot statue was designed and sculpted by Ilonggo artist Harry Mark Gonzales, who also made the Pura Villanueva-Kalaw at Molo Plaza. Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas, members of the Sangguniang Panglungsod, other city officials, and family members of the late former chief magistrate led the unveiling of the statue. In his message during the unveiling ceremony, Treñas said that the statue should serve as a symbol for today’s Ilonggos to strive for excellence. “As we venture into our everyday lives as public servants and youth of our community, I hope this sculpture will inspire us to continue aiming for excellence. As a leader myself, my motivation and inspiration stems from our former leaders who laid down the path and standard for quality and selfless public service,” the mayor said. “Let us always remember the vital role of our predecessors like Justice Ramon Avanceña in transforming our community into a better one. With the likes of Justice Avanceña and all other illustrious Ilonggos, we take immense pride in celebrating a culture of excellence. We can always say that we are proud to be Ilonggos,” he added. Ben Avanceña, the former chief justice’s grandson, thanked the city government and the public for continuing to honor their grandfather. Thedd Aldritz Geca Maglocot from Guimbal, Iloilo bagged the coveted award for his performance of Tom Jones’ “Delilah” during the grand finale held in Long Beach California, USA on August 4. The 9-year-old also won the Grand Champion Vocalist in the World in the junior division. Maglocot is reportedly the second Ilonggo to ever win the title of Grand Champion Performer of the World after Jed Madela won the award in the Senior Division in 2005. The Philippines had 106 representatives in this year’s World Championship of Performing Arts competition. He was 94. “After more than seven decades of sharing his music propelled by the generosity of spirit that he so selflessly gave to his audience from all walks of life, the curtain now closes on this artist with a mission,” his wife, Corazon, said in a social media post on Sunday. Kabayao was born in 1929 in Negros Occidental, with roots from Iloilo. He was the first Filipino to play at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York City at 19 years old. He was dubbed “Father of Outreach for Classical Music,” bringing the music of the masters to the masses starting in the 1950s and holding classical concerts for the grassroots in even the most unconventional venues from Aparri to Jolo. Through his transcriptions, 24 Philippine folk songs and kundiman (folk love songs) were transformed into virtuosic gems for violin and piano, enriching the violin literature of Filipino music. He earned a Presidential Award of Merit in 1969 and a President Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1972. “We deeply mourn the loss of Maestro Gilopez Kabayao, an exceptional Ilonggo violinist and a cultural icon whose legacy will always live on, not just in Iloilo City, but across the country,” Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas said in a statement yesterday, October 14. He added that Kabayao’s music connected people worldwide, fostering understanding between nations. At home, he had a profound impact, especially on young Filipino musicians who admired him as a role model. The mayor said his “music wasn’t just art. It brought hope and unity to our people.” “In Iloilo City, we are especially grateful for his contributions. His legacy will live on through the music he inspired in others,” Treñas added. He was nominated to the Order of the National Artist in June this year. Text Any textual data included in the document ILOILO CITY, Philippines — The completion of the P295-million repair work on the controversial Ungka flyover in Iloilo may have to wait for some time. The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has announced that the full reopening of the flyover, initially scheduled for August, has been reset to November this year Sanny Boy Oropel, regional director of the DPWH in Western Visayas, reasoned that the rectification techniques, including drilling and jet grouting every 6 meters up to 52 m of the flyover, followed by curing periods, are complex. The presence of underground cabling systems of utilities, such as water and telephone lines, also slowed down the process, he added. According to Oropel, the contractor, Monolithic Construction and Concrete Products Inc., was carefully conducting seismic tests to ensure the stability of the soil beneath the structure. Huge budget The first phase of repairs, with a budget of P95 million, is expected to conclude by July 30 while the second phase, which costs P200 million, will still commence in August, said Oropel. At present, the two inner lanes of the flyover have been opened to traffic but only from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. daily. The cost of the Ungka flyover in Iloilo had soared from its original budget of P680 million to P975 million due to ongoing repairs. Oropel appealed for public understanding regarding the delays, saying that the first phase of repairs was 65-percent complete as of June 30. Engineering consultant Adam Abinales recommended adding bored piles to stabilize the structure. This requires the removal and possible replacement of the existing prestressed concrete girders to accommodate the necessary drilling equipment. The new piles will need to be bored to a depth of at least 40m, compared to the current depths of 26m to 28m. ‘Wavy feel’ The flyover, designed to alleviate traffic congestion at the intersection of Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr. Avenue and President Corazon Aquino Avenue here, connects Barangay Ungka of Jaro district in Iloilo City to Barangay Ungka 2 of Pavia town in Iloilo province. The 453.7-m Ungka flyover was opened to the public in June 2022 but was closed in September of the same year after public complaints over the “wavy feel” while driving over it, as well as reports and images of flooding at the top of the flyover during rainy days. To address the issues, the DPWH spent P13 million last year on a third-party geotechnical investigation, which found the structure to be sinking. The Ungka flyover was funded through the efforts of former Sen. Franklin Drilon to cut travel time to Iloilo International Airport in Cabatuan town. Phase 1 of the rectification work, which involves 2,352 linear meters of jet grouting on multiple piers, began in January on a P95.95-million contract. A pier is a type of structure that extends to the ground below or into the water. It is used to support the flyover and transfer the loads to the foundation.
