The ER 1-94 fund grants host communities of power plants access to resources for development and environmental projects. PEDC, a subsidiary of Meralco PowerGen Corp. and Global Business Power Corp., facilitated the funding under this provision. Phase 2 of the project installed a 30-kilowatt rooftop solar PV system and streetlights at the hospital. This installation is expected to significantly reduce the hospital’s energy consumption while ensuring better lighting for the safety and security of the hospital’s premises. Phase 1 of the solar project, inaugurated in March 2024, focused on the hospital’s COVID-19 ward and cut monthly electricity expenses by roughly ₱80,000. The initial phase cost ₱2.6 million. The combined cost of both phases reached ₱5.27 million. Provincial Administrator Raul Banias, representing Governor Arthur Defensor, praised the project’s impact on the hospital’s operational expenses. Panay Energy Development Corp. Thus, with only 10 weeks remaining in 2024, the IPHO has reminded residents to maintain rigorous efforts in searching for and eliminating mosquito breeding sites to further reduce dengue cases across the province. From January 1 to October 19, 2024, Iloilo Province recorded 10,530 dengue cases with 29 fatalities, marking a 624% increase compared to the same period last year, which saw 1,454 cases and two deaths. Dengue is a viral disease transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, particularly Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. Symptoms typically include high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, joint and muscle pain, rash, and mild bleeding. In severe cases, dengue can progress to dengue hemorrhagic fever, which can lead to blood plasma leakage, organ impairment, and even death. IPHO head Dr. Maria Socorro Colmenares-Quiñon emphasized the ongoing severity of the situation, saying, “We are still under a state of calamity, and case numbers have not yet dropped to a level where we can relax.” The trend shows a gradual decrease in cases following the peak from August 4-10, when the province reported 1,122 cases. With fire-related incidents continuing to pose a significant risk to lives and properties, the provincial government is calling on the public to adopt fire safety measures and increase awareness on how simple actions can drastically reduce fire hazards. The risk of fire is always present, and it only takes a moment for a small spark to escalate into a life-threatening disaster, according to the provincial government. This month, it is intensifying its fire safety campaign to ensure that everyone knows what to do before, during, and after a fire. March has been designated as Fire Prevention Month in the Philippines to commemorate the anniversary of the founding of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) in 1991, an agency tasked with ensuring fire safety across the country. This month-long observance serves as a reminder of the importance of fire prevention, especially as incidents often spike during the dry season, when fire hazards are heightened. Through its Balita sa Kapitolyo Facebook Page, the provincial government is actively disseminating fire prevention tips, hoping to reach as many households and institutions as possible. They are encouraging everyone to be vigilant and adopt these simple yet effective safety measures: * Unplug devices when not in use and avoid overloading circuits. * Check for leaks and store liquefied petroleum gas tanks in well-ventilated areas. * Enforce a strict “No Smoking” policy at home and dispose of cigarette butts properly. * Keep flammable materials like candles, lighters, and matches out of children’s reach. * Establish emergency and evacuation plans, and familiarize everyone with escape routes. * Close doors to contain the fire, breathe through a wet cloth to avoid smoke inhalation, and remember to call 911. The possibility was discussed during a courtesy call to Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor, Jr., led by PFF President John Gutierrez. Gutierrez emphasized Iloilo’s significance as the cradle of football in the Philippines, making it a fitting venue for the prestigious event. He expressed confidence that the province has what it takes to meet the stringent requirements set by FIFA for hosting the competition.
