December 18 is currently observed only as a local or regional holiday, but the descendants of Lopez Jaena want it elevated to national status to raise public awareness — especially among the youth — of his role in igniting the Philippine struggle for freedom through the written word. Francis Cruz, spokesperson of the Lopez Jaena family, said it is troubling that many Filipinos are unfamiliar with the contributions of Iloilo’s first national hero despite his influence on the reform movement against Spanish colonial rule. “Many of our young generations waay kabalo sang istorya sang aton nga mga heroes, especially local heroes. It was printed in Bacolod City with the financial assistance of an ardent admirer of the hero, Vice Mayor Benigno G. Hinolan of Murcia, Negros Occidental. The second edition of the book was published by the Graciano Lopez Jaena Foundation in 1988, and the third edition in 2002. A recent survey in the internet showed that copies of the book are held by twenty-eight (28) major libraries in nine foreign countries. In the Philippines, thirty-five (35) libraries hold the book. The 35 libraries are spread from the Dagupan City Library in the North to Ateneo de Zamboanga University Library in the South. As seen in the title, this new volume includes a Brief Biography of Lopez Jaena and an Annotated Bibliography. The Bibliography is divided into two parts. Part I comprises the works of Lopez Jaena and Part II consists of writings about him. The Annotated Bibliography is, by no means, complete. Biographical Text Gregorio Yulo served as the seventh governor of Iloilo from 1917 to 1922, under the leadership of three American governor-generals: Francis Burton Harrison, Newton W. Gilbert, and Leonard Wood. During the Philippine Revolution, the people successfully expelled the Spanish from the municipality. However, when American forces arrived, Estancia was reduced to a mere barrio of Balasan. In 1918, Governor Yulo played a pivotal role in the formal separation of Estancia from Balasan, establishing it as an independent municipality. Text Any textual data included in the document GUIMBAL, Iloilo is a unique blend of old and new that gives a distinctive charm to visitors. Despite its bustling main roads, the town offers a calming and peaceful atmosphere amid historic treasures. It has fascinating restored landmark buildings found along the way such as Guimbal National High School along the National Highway of the Poblacion. Established in June 1946, this huge learning institution sits on an 8-hectare lot at the corner of Rizal and Magsaysay streets. Its centerpiece is the Gabaldon building, the first to be constructed in the school premises. A feature of the first decades of the American colonial rule, Gabaldon buildings are schoolhouses built from 1907 to 1946. Made mostly of wood, the building is situated on an elevated area flanked by two 11-step stairs. The building is dominantly painted in white with touches of dark brown and red, contrasting nicely with the bright blue sky behind it. Its frontage bears the name “Mataas na Paaralang Nasyonal ng Guimbal.” The Guimbal Central Elementary School across the National High School also has its own Gabaldon Building. Facing the main entrance, it is situated in the left side of the main building. The Gabaldon Building is dominantly painted in green with yellow and white patches. It has five front pillars and attached to the middle pillar is a brass plate with the seal of the United States of America and the text, “Rebuilt with the Aid of the People of the United States of America Under the Philippine Rehabilitation Act of 1946.” On top of the brass plate is the name of the school with an old Philippine seal. The picturesque St. Nicolas of Tolentine Parish Church is the most popular attraction for visitors of this town. The Baroque architectural style of the present church is a reconstruction of the first church built in 1774. Its outside walls are of yellow sandstone. However, it was destroyed in an earthquake in 1787. More reconstructions came in 1893 to 1896 but was again destroyed during the Second World War and the 1948 Lady Kaykay earthquake. Still big draws for visitors are the 17th century Bantayans found in Barangays Rizal Tuguisan, C. Colon, and Pescadores. These are just a few of the oldest remnants of the original Spanish settlement in Guimbal. The Bantayans remind us of their original function of securing the area from pirates. The Moros depopulated many of our Christianized coastal towns through their merciless constant attack. They swept the coasts and ravaged everything. Towns are looted and burned and their inhabitants carried off as slaves. Some areas were almost completely abandoned by their inhabitants and discouraged settlement. The Bantayans are still impressively intact and definitely worth seeing. The Guimbal Steel Bridge measuring 348 meters long and almost 11 meters wide is considered the Longest Steel Bridge in Western Visayas. It connects Barangay Bagumbayan to Barangay Bongol. It is made of Pittsburgh Steel from Virginia, USA and was finished in 1932. Getting around Guimbal is not a problem even if you do not have a car as there are tricycle services throughout the town. The town is open to everyone eager to explore its rich culture and history. Also known for its quiet beaches, not to mention many accommodation establishments to choose from, Guimbal clearly has a lot to offer to visitors. Guimbal is a Fourth-Class municipality located 29 kilometers south from the city. Text Any textual data included in the document For centuries, hand-loom weaving has been a vital part of Iloilo’s cultural heritage, passed down through generations and showcasing the creativity and skill of talented artisans. The hand-loom weaving industry has played a significant role in Iloilo’s economy, especially in the late 18th century, when woven textiles were highly valued trade items. The industry has provided employment to many skilled weavers, especially women in remote barangays who continue their ancestral legacy. Commercial production of hand-woven textiles remains an important contributor to the Ilonggo economy. By the late 1980s to mid-1990s, traditional weaving skills faced the threat of extinction in several communities across Iloilo. In response, a growing movement sought to revive hand-loom weaving as a sustainable, eco-friendly alternative to mass-produced textiles. Early efforts, supported by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), focused on helping weavers regain traditional skills, adopt natural dyes, and secure looms and fibers. Today, the hand-loom weaving industry not only preserves traditional techniques but also promotes fair trade and ethical practices. By choosing hand-loomed products, consumers help preserve this craft and support the livelihoods of local artisans. In the towns of Oton, Tigbauan, Igbaras, Miagao, Badiangan, Janiuay, and Dueñas, loom weaving is a thriving home-based industry, contributing significantly to local economies and family incomes. To safeguard this cultural heritage, the Iloilo Provincial Government, through the Provincial Culture, Arts, History, and Tourism Office, has taken steps to promote and preserve the craft, most notably through the annual Indigenous Fiber Fashion Fair. Established in 2008 in partnership with SM City Iloilo, the Indigenous Fiber Fashion Fair features exhibits, demonstrations, and fashion shows that highlight the local weaving industry. In 2015, the event evolved into a collaboration with ISAT-University’s Fashion Design and Merchandising program, providing a platform for emerging designers. Many of these designers have gone on to gain recognition in Iloilo and across the country. This year, six emerging fashion designers are poised to take the stage: John Patrick Tajo, Jeraldine Nofre, Donato Peniero, Wendy Tanaleon, Kim Ivan Delgra, and Jerico Labata. These student designers focus on reinterpreting Ilonggo artistry and craftsmanship, using locally hand-woven fabrics produced specifically for their brands by a small community of artisan weavers. Their devotion to local handcraft traditions promises to make their designs among the most distinctive in the industry. Fashion shows featuring these designers will be held at 6 p.m. at SM City Iloilo’s Lower Ground Floor, Entrance 4 Hallway (fronting BDO). Designers Jeff Ticao and Otet Patrimonio will present on September 27, followed by John Montinola and Jun-g Candelario on September 28. The finale on September 29 will feature the Lin-ay Sang Iloilo candidates. The 17th Indigenous Fiber Fashion Fair is part of Iloilo Provincial Government’s Tourism Month celebration, alongside AgriByahe and Bugana, running from September 26 to 30, 2024. Elvert Bañares, Iloilo Festivals Foundation, Inc. (IFFI), artistic director, said some tribe members even have “panata” or devotion and prepare well before their performance on Saturday. “They came in very prepared and they did excellently. They worked hard to represent Iloilo as best as possible,” Bañares told Panay News. The concept of Tribu Pan-ay’s performances between the Dinagyang 2024 and Aliwan Fiesta remained the same, said Bañares. “It is a story of faith and devotion in a land called Pan-ay. Sir Tata Carado, our performers, our artists, and our team worked tirelessly to bring this concept to life,” said Bañares. Bañares, a renowned film director, producer, and multidisciplinary artist, said he witnessed how the tribe showed dedication, humility, and commitment during their preparation. “I always say this to the tribe as our guiding principle: There’s no victory in the absence of values and there’s never a defeat in the presence of readiness and dignity,” said Bañares. “This victory is for all Ilonggos and all Filipinos anywhere in the world. We hope that through the performances of our tribes, we can make you happy and proud. And that we deepen our spirituality, so we can be emotionally guided as we journey through life,” he added. Tribu Pan-ay of the Fort San Pedro National High School was adjudged the grand champion in the Dinagyang Tribes Competition at the 2024 Dinagyang Festival last Jan. 28. Tribu Pan-ay received P25 million worth of school projects for Fort San Pedro National High School and the P1-million cash prize and a trophy. With their enduring spirit and talent, Tribu Pan-ay emerged victorious again after claiming the championship trophy and the P1.5-million cash prize in the Aliwan Fiesta 2024: Parade of Champions held in Manila on Saturday night. They On the other hand, the Tultugan Festival of Maasin, Iloilo, placed second in the Aliwan Fiesta cultural street dance competition. The festival showcases the vibrant celebration featuring bamboo instruments, highlighting the rich cultural heritage of Maasin. Eric Divinagracia, IFFI artistic director, stressed the tribe’s performance showcased not just Panay Island’s discovery during the Spanish colonization, but their cultural heritage and sustained faith in Señor Santo Niño. “We showed our Dinagyang presentation, beautiful drum beats which matched the performance of our dancers and accompanied by various elements, sets, and props all in devotion to Señor Santo Niño,” Divinagracia told reporters after the awarding ceremony. Meanwhile, Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. congratulated Mayor Jerry Treñas of Iloilo City and Mayor Francis Amboy of Maasin, Iloilo following the success of their respective festivals. The governor lauded Treñas and Amboy for their leadership and dedication to promoting cultural heritage through the festivals. He emphasized the festivals’ role in fostering tourism and promoting local identity. “I am immensely proud of Mayor Treñas and Mayor Amboy for their exceptional stewardship and the outstanding performances of Dinagyang and Tultugan. These festivals not only highlight Iloilo’s vibrant culture but also strengthen our community bonds,” said Governor Defensor. The governor stressed the success of Dinagyang and Tultugan festivals highlighting their significance as cultural landmarks that unite and inspire communities across Western Visayas. “We look forward to further elevating Iloilo’s cultural prominence and continuing to celebrate our heritage through festivals like Dinagyang and Tultugan,” Defensor added. The Aliwan Fiesta is an annual cultural event in the Philippines that brings together various festivals across the country to compete in a grand showcase of Filipino culture and heritage. Organized by the Manila Broadcasting Company (MBC) and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), the event features three main competitions: the cultural street dance competition, the float parade, and the Reyna ng Aliwan beauty pageant.
